Narcissistic, Fascistic power grab hinges on "being present" and loads of amnesia

It's one thing to disagree with having impeached Donald Trump (twice), it's another thing entirely to pretend as though the impeachments never happened by advocating their expungement from the record. This is the stuff of China's Tiananmen Square to rewrite history for political advantage while simultaneously decrying the heretofore impeachments as mere "fantastical political theater" (Stefanik Resolution p.6).

But that's exactly what Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) are up to with feeble minded House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's backing. McCarthy has lost order over his House members, because he raised the debt ceiling and a virulent minority of Republicans, the Freedom Caucus, is holding him over a barrel. McCarthy has warned these unhinged Republicans that they have a narrow majority in the House and if they keep acting out, then their House majority hangs on by a thread.

The offending measures include putting forth resolutions for the expungements of both of Trump’s impeachments as well as Rep. Lauren Boebert's (R-Co.) putting forward a resolution of a sham impeachment of President Joe Biden, with no back up or buy-in from constituents or her fellow House members to speak of, as no case can be made for the high bar of high crimes and misdemeanors to pin on Biden. Additionally, Democrats shouted “Shame! Shame!” towards McCarthy over censuring Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Ca.) for Trump-Russia “lies” during the first impeachment. It's the only the third such censure in the last two decades.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) put minimal effort into her one and a half page resolution, indicating that even she is aware that a Democrat controlled Senate would never pass this resolution to expunge Trump’s 2019 impeachment for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress regarding a phone call Trump had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which Trump appeared to condition the release of U.S. military aid to Ukraine on an announcement by Ukrainian officials that they were investigating Biden for alleged corruption.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) introduced her expungement resolution regarding Trump’s January 2021 incitement of insurrection, based on his role in instigating the bloody MAGA attempted putsch at the Capitol earlier that month. Stefanik’s resolution to expunge his second impeachment reveals support for Trump’s “Big Lie” about the “stolen” election.

When we erase history and subscribe to presentism, ascribing today's mores to yesterday’s values, we devalue learning from history. Winston Churchill said, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

Narcissists and psychopaths live predominantly in the present and have a discontinuous relationship with time. It's shameful that so much of psychology has been co-opted by the mandate of mindfulness to “be present.” It's a short line from being present to presentism. It's no wonder so many narcissistic gurus advocate being present, so that you forget their misdeeds of the past. By understanding the past, patterns start to form, and you can avoid hardships in the future. Psychology is predicated on this notion. Without the mooring of past, present and future, our society becomes sicker with increasing narcissism and psychopathy as expressed through authoritarian and fascist governments.
